After such an unprecedented and disruptive school year, there have been many calls from government agencies to study and report on how our youth’s mental health has been tested during this pandemic year.
Kids Anxiety and Stress Levels
Despite this effort from government agencies, studies take time and reports about findings and organizational solutions are not immediate enough to address the growing despair and anxiety that are currently testing our youth right now. Life is full of stresses but here are 5 ways to relieve that stress and anxiety in our youth currently. These methods are not new and can be implemented right away to have an immediate positive effect on decreasing the anxiety and stress levels of our youth.
1. Get Active
Get Moving-There are so many benefits that come from physical exercise. Get out and go for a walk when the weather is cooperating. If it isn’t, there are plenty of online movement breaks that are not only engaging for kids, but also educational all at the same time.
2. Practice Mindful Meditation
Practice mindfulness. Adults can become good role models for their kids by practicing some “Positive Programming.” There are so many great online resources that can help in this regard. As the saying goes, “you can’t help others until you learn to help yourself.” Parents need to be mindful of this and learn to reduce their own anxiety first. Better yet, practice meditation and mindfulness with your kids by adopting them as part of your everyday life. The time you are giving yourself and your kids while you are meditating and being mindful is “the gift that keeps on giving.”Â
3. Get Musical
Music is the universal language that everyone can get behind. Play and dance to your favourite songs, listen to relaxing music or sing a song yourself! I still remember the song I learned in elementary school and sing it to this day to relieve stress for myself. Of course, there are excellent online resources/videos for kids of all ages to get behind and dance their stresses away.

4. Get Slimey
Kids of all ages love to feel the smooth, gooey and often very visually appealing and scented slime being squeezed through their fingers. This is not the slime that we as adults are accustomed to, the green icky goo that often came with the toy science kits when we were kids. The slime these days are so much more than that and come in a variety of colours, scents and textures. You will love using your tactile skills on these modern slimes and relieve stress all at the same time, a win win!Â
